Combination Locks: How do they work?

Changing the 3-digit combination lock on a suitcase to an exclusive code is possible by changing the combination.

The lock must first be set to the current combination. Once the thumb wheels are freed from the locking mechanism (currently in the open position), a small button is pressed (usually with a ballpoint pen).

Before pushing the larger button (which opens the lock), you can turn the 3 numbered thumb wheels independently. In this way, the numbered thumb wheels are reconnected to the locking mechanism, enabling the new code to be entered.

This method relies on the fact that the notched disks next to the thumb wheels are visible (part of the locking mechanism itself). It makes little difference what number is displayed on the knurled thumb wheel. It is simply a matter of rotating the disks until the lock opens once they have been aligned.
