Choosing the right mattress is one of the most important steps to get a good night’s sleep. This is also one of the most difficult things, as exact matches are so individual. We cannot choose the best mattress. However, what the below guide can do is to report on objective properties such as durability and structure and give an unbiased and direct impression.

How to choose a mattress?
To buy it successfully, you need to distinguish the real benefits of mattresses from all marketing Gibberish. A guide to choosing a mattress will help you decide how to determine if a mattress provides sufficient support and pressure relief for your body, what type of mattress size to choose, when to buy it, and what question needs to be asked from the salesperson (or online chat bot) in order to check if the mattress is durable.
The Best foam Mattresses
If you like the feeling of sinking into the bed instead of resting on the bed, a mattress made entirely of polyurethane foam (also known as polyfoam) is best. Memory foam mattresses tend to fit the body and give a “hugging” sensation when inserted, but they can also make you feel locked in place. Non-memory foam mattresses are not as curved as the memory foam type, but they are easier to move. The guide to the best foam mattresses includes the option of polyurethane foam with or without memory foam. Foam mattresses come in a variety of prices. The low-cost memory foam mattress Nova foam Comfort Grande and the non-memory foam mattress Tuft & Needle Original are well under $ 1,000 each. Our favorite of high-end memory foam, Loom & Leaf (Relaxed Firm), is more than double the cost, but is constructed from a more durable material.

This Costco favorite is invaluable because it’s made from layers of foam that’s as dense (and probably durable) as double-cost mattress foam. Testers loved its soft and supportive touch, but some felt it was too stiff.
Loom & Leaf (Relaxed Firm)
Foam mattress with a luxe feel, no bounce
With a thick padded top and some of the highest foam densities I’ve seen online on mattresses, the Loom & Leaf feels more substantial (and probably lasts longer) than a mattress under $ 1,000. Since it doesn’t come with a box, it’s hard to off-gas in your home.
Tuft & Needle Original Best non-memory-foam foam mattress
- PROVEN: We're not shy to say, people love us; This mattress has 1 of the highest percentages of 5 star reviews across mattresses on Amazon; We like to keep things honest and transparent, that goes for our business model, our products, and our reviews
- PROPRIETARY ADAPTIVE FOAM: Constructed with freshly poured T and N Adaptive foam, this mattress provides a bouncy yet supportive feel perfect for all sleeping positions and also allows us to box the mattress for quick shipping without compromising quality
- NOT HOT, NOT COLD, JUST RIGHT: Our high grade foam is more advanced than outdated materials such as latex and memory foam; The T and N Adaptive foam sleeps cool, sleeps comfortable and offers great pressure relief, plus you won’t disturb your sleeping partner

The Taft & Needle Original is not made of memory foam and will not fit all contours. The top is soft but the undercoat is solid, so it’s supportive and at the same time feels calm.
Best latex mattress
Latex mattresses are generally more elastic and breathable than mattresses made of memory foam or polyfoam, but some models may feel stiff or too elastic. It also tends to be more expensive than regular foam mattresses. Latex is durable in nature, so if you weigh more than 200 pounds, or if you need a bed that lasts longer than the usual 10-year foam bed warranty, latex mattresses are the way to go. We’ve tested three all-tex mattresses over the years and found that Zenhaven (shown here with box springs) is more padded and comfortable than the other mattresses.
Best latex foam mattress
Zen Haven
The Latex Zenhaven is a thousand USD more expensive than similar latex options online, but should be more durable and breathable (and therefore feel cooler) than many foam mattresses. A decent latex mattress is expensive, but I think it’s worth the money. This model is heavy and requires a sturdy frame or box jump.
Best Hybrid Mattresses
There is no “official” definition of a hybrid mattress. The best hybrid mattress includes a foam bed made of steel coils and sock covers, and a popular spring mattress designed with a large amount of foam. Two of our favorite hybrid mattresses, the Leesa Hybrid and Tempur-Adapt (Medium Hybrid), have been consistently ranked at or near the top of foam mattress tests over the past two years. With a padded cover, polyfoam and base wash layer, the WinkBed (Luxury Firm) hybrid is one of the best choices for internal spring mattress. The hybrid Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid is the best mattress tested for the Queen for less than $ 400 and is one of the best choices in the cheapest mattress.
Leesa Hybrid
- Our mattress: The Leesa Hybrid mattress combines premium foam layers with individually-wrapped pocket springs for superior edge to edge support. The Leesa Hybrid mattress was thoughtfully designed with the best of both worlds, featuring a cooling avena foam Top layer, a contouring memory foam recovery layer and an active pocket Spring layer enhanced with edge support.

Super comfortable but expensive
With luxurious slow sinking foam and rugged edge support, the Tempur-Adapt (medium hybrid) is far superior to most mattresses tested. But when it comes to the cost part its four times much.
Best Innerspring mattresses
Innerspring mattresses provide a floating feel thanks to the steel coils that reinforce the layers of fibers and foam underneath the padded top. If you feel the foam mattress sagging or overheating, the internal springs increase resistance, stiffen the edges and essentially increase airflow. However, the feathers inside are notorious for being difficult to buy, and traditionally you have to go to a mattress store to browse dozens of different models with misleading names, specifications and features. WinkBed (luxury), Asteria Beth (pillow top), IKEA Hesstun (medium), and other options in the guide for internal spring mattresses have shown better performance in testing. Some, including WinkBed, can be purchased online and are often subject to generous trial and return policies.
WinkBed (Best Innerspring mattresses)
A good layer of base coil, including the rugged ones around it, provides the WinkBed with some bounce and rugged edge support. And the thick polyfoam pillow top sways loosely without being sticky or soft.
AsteriaBeth (Best Innerspring mattresses )
This luxurious colored mattress draws softness from padded foam, silk and wool (a material that is more luxurious than other options), as well as talalay latex and 520 micro sole. A little over 1,000 coils with lower pockets provide adequate support for all sleep positions. Wait for the sale so you don’t break the bank.
IKEA Hesstun (Best Innerspring mattresses)
This cheap mattress isn’t fragile at all, and it does have features such as a curved-fit micro coils and a luxurious European top. These are usually found on more expensive mattresses. However, if you don’t like it, you’ll have to take it to IKEA to change it.
Best Cheap Mattresses
Cheap mattresses (Queens under $ 400) tend to be pretty basic. These are usually fully foam (or forward foam hybrid) mattresses, made of less layered, less dense foam, with fewer bells and whistles compared to the more expensive options (and the internal spring mattresses tested in this price range were generally quite trivial and uncomfortable.) But if you’re on a tight budget there are suitable options such as, the Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid, Best Price Memory Foam and classic branded CoolGel Memory Foam, turned out to be more comfortable, supportive and fulfilling than most other products.
Best mattresses under $ 400
Zinus Cooled Copper Adaptive Hybrid
A fully bouncy foam-forward hybrid, the Copper Adaptive Hybrid combines stretch with the feel of classic memory foam for a non-cheap, practical and comfortable mattress. But its motion insulation and edge support are just the center of the pack.

Best mattress for your sleep position
People change position more than they realize throughout the night. However, choosing a mattress based on how you start when your head hits the pillow will improve your comfort and make it easier to fall asleep. It’s mainly about adjusting your sleep position to the level of mattress hardness.
The best mattress for side-sleepers
Side sleepers usually feel most comfortable on soft to medium mattresses. It’s luxurious enough to cushion your shoulders and hips, yet strong enough to keep your spine in line. The full-bodied Loom & Leaf (Relaxed Firm) has a locking feel that doesn’t sink too much, and the Leesa Hybrid is a little stiff and durable. And those who really insist on padded mattresses may like the serta Perfect sleeper Kleinmon II (Pillow Top Plush). There are many more recommendations for a mattress on our guide to best mattresses.

FAQ
A good mattress should have the following qualities.
1. There is a generous depth to the mattress.
2. Comfortable layers.
3. Support for the spine.
4. Memory foam top layer provides cushioning.
5. Relief of pressure points.
The medium-firm mattress (usually between 5 and 7 on the scale) provides most sleepers with a good balance between support and comfort. In a small study published in 2010, medium-firm mattresses were found to help relieve pain and improve sleep quality.
Purchasing a mattress: things to consider
1. You should choose a mattress based on your weight, body shape, and age
2. Choosing a mattress also involves medical considerations.
3. As well as the mattress size, the room size should be considered as well.
4. Before you visit a mattress store, know what mattress you prefer.
In general, a firm mattress is more comfortable for those without back pain. It is less stressful on muscles, veins, and arteries when you sleep on a firmer surface. Circulation is improved, and muscles are less strained.
For most people, it will be worthwhile to upgrade their mattress instead of sticking with what you have. A quality night’s sleep is an investment in your well-being, since you will spend roughly 1/3 of your life in bed.
To cushion their impact points, side sleepers should select mattresses that range from Medium Soft to Medium Firm. Beds with light conforming are best for back and stomach sleepers.
A queen bed and a king bed are both of the same length, so what matters is how wide your mattress is. A king mattress has 16 inches more width than a queen mattress, making it ideal for those who prefer a bit more wiggle room. Queen beds, however, are ideal for smaller rooms due to their reduced width.
Full mattresses (also known as double beds) are considered the golden standard for couples, and can accommodate up to two people. Some couples may find they prefer a king or queen sized mattress however.
With three firmness levels to choose from, Plush Soft is the most suitable for side sleepers since it employs soft foams so your body can be cradled. For those who don’t want anything too soft, Luxury Firm is also a good option.
As the name suggests, a hybrid mattress combines two different types of mattresses. For our purposes, we are referring to mattresses with springs and a comfort layer on top. You may hear mattresses with different types of foam referred to as “hybrids.”
