This Costco favorite is invaluable because it’s made from layers of foam that’s as dense (and probably durable) as double-cost mattress foam. Testers loved its soft and supportive touch, but some felt it was too stiff.

With a thick padded top and some of the highest foam densities I’ve seen online on mattresses, the Loom & Leaf feels more substantial (and probably lasts longer) than a mattress under $ 1,000. Since it doesn’t come with a box, it’s hard to off-gas in your home.

The Taft & Needle Original is not made of memory foam and will not fit all contours. The top is soft but the undercoat is solid, so it’s supportive and at the same time feels calm.

Latex mattresses are generally more elastic and breathable than mattresses made of memory foam or polyfoam, but some models may feel stiff or too elastic. It also tends to be more expensive than regular foam mattresses. Latex is durable in nature, so if you weigh more than 200 pounds, or if you need a bed that lasts longer than the usual 10-year foam bed warranty, latex mattresses are the way to go. Super comfortable but expensive

With luxurious slow sinking foam and rugged edge support, the Tempur-Adapt (medium hybrid) is far superior to most mattresses tested. But when it comes to the cost part its four times much.

Best Innerspring mattresses

Innerspring mattresses provide a floating feel thanks to the steel coils that reinforce the layers of fibers and foam underneath the padded top. If you feel the foam mattress sagging or overheating, the internal springs increase resistance, stiffen the edges and essentially increase airflow. However, the feathers inside are notorious for being difficult to buy, and traditionally you have to go to a mattress store to browse dozens of different models with misleading names, specifications and features.
